Minutes and matters arising

The minutes from the meeting of 2014-01-17 were approved.

Treasurer's report

The bank account has been opened and we have the cheque book.

There are £300 in the account and we hold £16.22 in cash.

23 members (and one junior) were signed up last time.

We were charged for the main hall last time and that has been paid. We need to sign a cheque for the room bill each time as they request it promptly.

There is a room hire evaluation form which we should fill in next time.
Action: Put on the agenda for the next committee meeting.

Next field meeting

This will be in Liskeard on 2014-03-08 (to coincide with the CHAHP event), starting at 11:30, meeting at the fountain by the chip shop.

We will walk through the town looking at the different rock types that can be found. These are likely to be hard rocks used for building.

There will be other walks and events going on that day. We will have a table at Stuart House for display and Calum will bring samples for it.

Brigitte will add the walk to the publicity for the day.

The following field meeting will be at Lyme Regis on 2014-04-05. In preparation, the talk on 2014-03-21 will be about fossils.

The next talk after that will be another field geology one covering faults and fold structures. This will not be in April, because that day is a public holiday, but on 2014-05-16. That's after the field meeting on 2014-05-03.

At the next meeting we will ask the members if they'd like a more extended field meeting, perhaps a weekend away in late summer.

Insurance

Field meetings is a potential grey area in terms of liability. Attendees aren't required to pay. Calum himself is likely to acquire insurance as a walk leader. This may require that he charges a significant fee to do that. To be investigated.

CHP-arranged insurance may be a good thing for CAGG, but we may also consider affiliating with the Royal Geological Society of Cornwall.

Action: This should be on the agenda for the next committee meeting.

Any other business

The Trevithick Society will soon be doing a talk on recovering minerals from the sea. Their next walk is at Delabole Slate Quarry (which may not actually be geologically very interesting). Only Trevithick Society members can attend their walks. It is worth tracking the activities of this society because there will often be talks of relevance to geology.

The committee is happy to adopt the CAGG logo that Calum has been using in communications so far.

Calum is looking for volunteers to collect granite samples in connection with identifying the origins of stone.

Brigitte would like to find out the location of a quarry called Troy's pit, somewhere to the north of Liskeard.

It was suggested that we make a rule stating that dogs attending field meetings should be kept on short leads.

Next meeting

There was no explicit agreement about the next committee meeting. If the agenda includes items requiring careful deliberation it has again been suggested that we hold a separate committee meeting to the public meeting in order to avoid distractions.

The meeting closed at 19:18.
