Previous minutes

The minutes were reviewed and accepted without modification.

Previous meetings

The Field Trip on 2015-10-31 with Jonathon King went well. It was attended by about 14 people.

The Xmas tree was displayed with varnished pebbles. But we have no images. There were no entries on the sign-up sheets that were left with it. For future events, CB suggested that sign-up sheets should have a few dummy entries because some humans don't like to make the first entry.

Future meetings

Agreed that we will continue to bring the CHAHP screen from Darite to meetings in the Long Room.

For the talk by Rick Stewart on 2016-01-15, PF will supply a laptop and CB will bring a projector. PNJ will bring the CHAHP projector from Darite as backup.

It was decided not to pursue the possible Field Trip to the Powder Mills with Paul Day because it seemed unlikely that there would be many features of geological interest to see.

We agreed to try and arrange for Kingsley Rickard (an expert on As).

For the April meeting, CB will still be at Skye, so this meeting will need an external speaker. This would be a good slot for Kingsley Rickard, if he is available.

CB agreed to do a talk for the May meeting and in June we plan to do a combined meeting and walk in Liskeard.

By the time of the AGM we hope to have the timetable for most of the rest of the year confirmed.

Provisionally we expect the talks in July and August will be by CB.

In September, the Reading the Hurlers dig will be in progress, so we should take the opportunity to visit it and perhaps have a talk in the Function Room of the Cheesewring Hotel.

We would like to use Carnglaze Caverns for the November talk on 2016-11-18. It could be in the conservatory if the main cavern is busy. This might be a preliminary summary of the Reading the Hurlers project.

CB said that he expected to organise more field trips closer to where he lives for the alternate non-Caradon Hill area trips. He also mentioned that there is starting to be wider interest in our trips.

CB and PF discussed beach erosion events, noting that Portwrinkle has lost a lot of sand recently.

Residential field trip

The tentative plan for the next trip is to study The Lizard between 2016-07-02 and 2016-07-09. Accommodation could be at Penryn, which is clusters of 4 rooms, each with their own bathroom and the use of a communal kitchen.

The price will be expressed per day, so people can be flexible about their attendance.

Future trips could be to the Lake District, Skye or Iceland.

Treasurer's report

Bank: £ 869.74
Cash: £ 41.45.

Insurance is due in February. It is increased from £79.50 to £83. It was agreed to continue with this policy.

It was felt that we are breaking even and we will continue with the £1:3 member:non-member meeting charge ratio.

Display stands

CB has investigated Display Stands which we could use at meetings and public events to show posters, maps and other information. He has access to a reprographics facility that can print up to A0 in size. An A1 poster would cost about £9.

CB suggested that members might like to sponsor a poster and other organisations might like to advertise. We will need to construct a prototype display so that people can see how such things might appear.

A floor-standing stand would be better than table-top stands so that the table is completely free for table-top displays samples and leaflets.

Action: CB will circulate references to possible display stands and produce an initial display.

Reading the Hurlers

There is a concern about an interruption in the flow of communication with Chris Mathews, Land Steward for the Duchy of Cornwall. It was suggested that Emma Stockley and PF could visit the office in Lostwithiel.

More work is needed for various permissions:

The visit to Exeter noted in the previous Minutes was successful.

CB, PF and Emma Stockley plan to meet on 2016-01-16.

PF noted that the Saltash U3A annual showcase event is on 2016-01-14 and she needs a poster for it:

Action: CB will send a poster by 2016-01-12.

The formal project managers are CB and Emma Stockley.

There is some confusion about the mail address for the project.

It is necessary to purchase outdoor equipments for the project to be ready in March.

AGM planning

The AGM will be on 2016-03-18. We would like to encourage a student to join the committee.
Action: CB will follow up.

The constitution requires minor updates, but this is not urgent.
Action: PNJ.

Next meeting

At Tregarthwin on 2016-03-11 at 19:30.

Agenda should include a finalisation of the programme.

Meeting closed at 21:58.
