CAGG committee, 2018-03-09
Minutes

Minutes of a Caradon Amateur Geology Group committee meeting held on 2018-03-09, 19:30 - 21:20. Readership is CAGG members.

Present:
Peter Jackson
Calum Beeson
Megan Shute
Pat Fitzsimmons
Anne Bolt
Tina Hitchings

The meeting was chaired by PF.

AGM agenda

The AGM agenda will be of similar form to that of the previous year. There are no matters arising from the previous Minutes. It was agreed that the chair will be PF.

Action: CB to contact Bob Jay and Emma Stockley to confirm that they would be willing to continue as committee members in case they cannot attend the meeting.

Financial status

PF showed the state of our accounts, to be presented at the AGM.

Income Expenditure
Membership £440.00 Room hire £105.00
Meetings £298.00 Speakers £355.00
Field trips £135.00 Stationery £8.14
Brought forward £1066.69 Insurance £84.00
Totals £1939.69 £552.14

The presentation shows the separate contributions to income from meetings and field trips. The previous year's funds amounted to £1066.69 and this year's are £1387.55. As we intend to operate with a financial baseline of £1000 this shows us to be in a healthy financial state and there is no need to increase our fees.

2018 programme

CB has produced a draft programme which is being proof-read by ES.

In previous discussions we have suggested using the programme as a leaflet which can be made available in museums and some shops. In that context, we discussed what contact information it should contain and TH said that it would be acceptable to use her GMAIL address for this purpose.

A budget of £100 was agreed to cover printing costs, but it was felt that we should not produce very many copies. Perhaps enough for the members, some noticeboards and a few each for committee members to use in ad hoc encounters with the public.

The programme emerges as follows:

2018-04-20
Chrissie Le Marchant: Building the Saltash tunnel
2018-04-28
A visit to Delabole Quarry. It was agreed that the CAGG can absorb any extra admission costs if necessary.
Action: To be organised by PF.

There will be no meeting. The field trip will be the third annual geology games. Because the tide will be outgoing at that time, we hope to have this at Carnglaze, with participants bringing food to share.
Action: CB to arrange with CR.

CB suggested that we invest in a cellphone with a published number to use as a contact device on field trips. It would normally be switched off except during trips. It might also be registered to issue 999 emergency text messages.
Action: PNJ to arrange.

AOB

PNJ mentioned two items raised from Caradon Archaeology:
  1. There is a stone called Great Whitstone at SX 23632 67802 and Iain Rowe asks if we can determine its composition. This is about 2km from Puckator Rock, so we may be able to visit it on 2018-03-31.
  2. A plan is forming to carry out some work at Trethevy Quoit somewhen around the beginning of July and we might like to get involved.

In discussion of (2), we agreed that it would be a good opportunity to obtain measurements of the crystalline structure of the granite. However, we wouldn't be able to use that to give a useful indication of its origin without doing more surveys around the side of Caradon Hill facing the Quoit. We would also be interested in looking at the soil from any test pits that are dug.

The Quoit is located at a geologically interesting site where there is a mixture of old slate, diorite and an elvan dyke.
